How can I get a licence? Before obtaining a scooter or motorcycle rider licence, you must successfully complete the Motorcycle Rider Training Scheme. This scheme is designed to help people gain basic riding skills before riding on the road. You have to book in for these and they fill up fast in the warmer months.Book by calling the RTA on 13 22 13.

Once you have past this practical course then you have to pass a 45 multiple choice road rules test at the RTA office, pay some $$ and you are ready to ride with your L pla
How long do I have my Learner Licence? You must have your learners permit for a minimum of 3 months then you do another practical riding test to get you Provisional licence.
Can I ride in Bus lanes? Yes but not BUS ONLY lanes, you can also ride in Transit lanes.Do I have to pay for parking? No if it is a designated Motorcyle/scooter park BUT if you park in a timed park like 2P you can park for free only for that time period of 2 hours.
Does my scooter need to be registered? Yes. All scooters ridden on the road need registration. This is normally done yearly. There are three parts to rego:
1) Pinkslip (an annual mechanical check to make sure your scooter is safe), new scooters have three years of grace from this check.
2) Green slip, this is the compulsory third party insurance.
3) Registration at the RTA.
Is comprehensive insurance compulsory? No, this covers the scooter you are riding so it depends what it's worth & if you want the value covered in the event of a ding or crumble. Up to you.
